Partly because new things are fun but also because I wanted to join in with a quilt along on Instagram. The pattern is called Meadowland by Then Came June. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=12oHit2bCa8hkiMR5VsimggFiGQTdtkDW" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=12oHit2bCa8hkiMR5VsimggFiGQTdtkDW" style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"></div><div><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">We are now in week three of the #meadowlandqal and as of last night I now have 8 blocks completed. I’m using a stack of Denyse Schmidt fabrics I had originally put together for a different project back in 2013 but never got around to it. It would have been cool to use black or charcoal for the background fabric but didn’t have any in my stash and talked myself out of it. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1pnwRMfPynZJg1nB5_9sYNGxsZo1Ikrmq" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1pnwRMfPynZJg1nB5_9sYNGxsZo1Ikrmq" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">I added a few more prints and wound up cutting for 25 blocks total, which should give me a finished quilt that’s 80” square. The kids helped me mix and match the fabric pieces. <span style="display: inline !important; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.301961); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><font color="#000000" face="sans-serif" size="3">The first block I sewed together ended up bugging me, the two orange prints were just too similar in value. That’s because we spent some time working on the basement and it’s a big useable space now with a play area for the kids, so I’m sewing down here, too. Eventually everything sewing related will live down here full time and Rita will get her bedroom back. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1jZQdycAnARiVQ2B4pPJqbhd5B0KaymUg" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1jZQdycAnARiVQ2B4pPJqbhd5B0KaymUg" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;">I love this method of making flying geese where you start out with one big square and end up with four flying geese units. A creative, quilty life. We changed houses, remodeled the new house, had a second baby, and I stay home with the kids now. In this time my sewing room has been packed up in boxes, waiting for me in the basement. And now it’s happening! I’ve moved the two kids into a shared bedroom and have set up a functioning sewing room. YAY.<br><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1VP930vxS9h2SvGXdc_42HsYKwx_HBrbH" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1VP930vxS9h2SvGXdc_42HsYKwx_HBrbH" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br></div>
Lots to unpack and organize still, but that’s the fun part, right? There’s a ton of long languished UFO’s hanging out and I’ve already finished up a few things while digging though. Here’s a couple of them. Leftover broken dishes blocks from a mini quilt swap became a throw pillow for Rita’s bedroom. She requested it be soft and cuddly, so I had to involve minky. I don’t really know why, but I did two layers of batting and things got pretty thick so I ended up doing a double fold binding and hand stitching it to the back.<div><br><div><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1MymKf0Fof4x0Cv5q2tNelikysnavqkZU" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1MymKf0Fof4x0Cv5q2tNelikysnavqkZU" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1V7vN1smLjr6M_m3kEWFdADnJpg09Tl1t" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1V7vN1smLjr6M_m3kEWFdADnJpg09Tl1t" style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"></div>

Although when I texted Jon the pic he replied "why is the bottom row upside down?" which made me laugh so hard because we'd all been lookin at it for hours and hadn't noticed. I'm a big fan of where Elizabeth (opquilt.com) and I have gotten so far.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">I'm counting 38 blocks, which means we're just past the halfway mark. I keep trying to stay ahead of her but I'd better get busy because once spring semester ends and she's done with grading, she'll have them all finished in no time! </span></div>
Krista Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14404340992690413199noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639049656914524195.post-57366378399083161002014-02-24T13:53:00.001-06:002014-02-24T13:53:54.797-06:00dawn blossom in progressI promised a dear IG friend months ago that I would test out a pattern for her when she finished drafting it. So that's what I'm up to! Started last weekend by pulling fabrics and starching, pressing, cutting... I got all the half square triangle and flying geese units sewn together and then let it sit for the week. <div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-dcb91Z4H-DA/UwujRpfHn2I/AAAAAAAAGec/qGf4cxpaZeo/s640/blogger-image-592584694.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-dcb91Z4H-DA/UwujRpfHn2I/AAAAAAAAGec/qGf4cxpaZeo/s640/blogger-image-592584694.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>So then this past weekend we were at Jon's parents' house and I pressed and trimmed the HSTs and geese, then sewed all the segments into blocks. At which point I debated on whether to go ahead with the table runner I had planned or turn it into a wall hanging instead. You see, the blocks turned out way bigger than I was imagining them in my head. Which is great, but also means the table runner will be way too big for our table, which is even smaller than the one it's pictured on below. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-NrFQ6JEW4rs/UwujUOwJ9GI/AAAAAAAAGek/iQf0qlPe6-w/s640/blogger-image--1757745765.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-NrFQ6JEW4rs/UwujUOwJ9GI/AAAAAAAAGek/iQf0qlPe6-w/s640/blogger-image--1757745765.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>So I think I'll end up doing the runner, but it will have to be sent down to my parents' house to live since they're the only ones with a table large enough to display it properly. I'm sure they'll be terribly disappointed, but parents were put here to make sacrifices for their children. </div><div><br></div></div><div>More on this later when it's finished.</div>Krista Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14404340992690413199noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639049656914524195.post-78399431650443939192014-01-05T13:37:00.001-06:002014-01-05T16:04:20.371-06:00sunday stash + birthday fun<span style="-webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875);">Yesterday was my birthday so we stopped off at Missouri Star Quilt Company on our way to the inlaws' house. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mDjT7Er4cfo/UsnPuMJEcsI/AAAAAAAAGco/AK5wl9XjAQQ/s640/blogger-image-334639905.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mDjT7Er4cfo/UsnPuMJEcsI/AAAAAAAAGco/AK5wl9XjAQQ/s640/blogger-image-334639905.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since 2013 was my year for stashing, I figure 2014 ought to be my year for slashing! With the #economyblockalong in full swing on Instagram, I started thinking about which hoarded fabric bundles I could use to play along. Any excuse to start something new, right?!<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kbuGFXwPPx0/Usm0fZJiBuI/AAAAAAAAGcA/JEU71fIEFO0/s640/blogger-image--511978562.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kbuGFXwPPx0/Usm0fZJiBuI/AAAAAAAAGcA/JEU71fIEFO0/s640/blogger-image--511978562.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
I posted this mosaic on IG and asked for feedback. Clockwise from top left: Dream On by Urban Chiks for Moda, Folk Modern by Ellen Luckett Baker for Kokka, some Civil War repros that I bought with Jon in mind (I love them, but he REALLY loves them) and Bake Sale by Lori Holt for Riley Blake. My goodness I got a lot of feedback! Surprisingly it was somewhat evenly split amongst the four.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dqj2f4uvXbg/UsnPi0UJWPI/AAAAAAAAGcQ/qGXH6cLbKL0/s640/blogger-image--834010817.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dqj2f4uvXbg/UsnPi0UJWPI/AAAAAAAAGcQ/qGXH6cLbKL0/s640/blogger-image--834010817.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Of course, after hemming and hawing and coming no closer to a decision, I ended up tucking those options back into my stash and pulling out my Flower Sugar by Lecien and the assortment of black and white prints I'd been building for an occasion such as this. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-my6TTFA0o4Y/UsnPq-EOMCI/AAAAAAAAGcg/8LigLA5zQgE/s640/blogger-image--999431532.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-my6TTFA0o4Y/UsnPq-EOMCI/AAAAAAAAGcg/8LigLA5zQgE/s640/blogger-image--999431532.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So here's where I'm at, almost all the cutting done and can't wait to start playing with the pieces! I'm making a total of 64 12" blocks which will yield a 96" square quilt. Go big or go home!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5QHlZha-eUs/UsnPl_e60KI/AAAAAAAAGcY/Nkjh3MN0Nr4/s640/blogger-image--1780920790.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5QHlZha-eUs/UsnPl_e60KI/AAAAAAAAGcY/Nkjh3MN0Nr4/s640/blogger-image--1780920790.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In addition to the wee bit of fabric shopping, I received a 14" rotating cutting mat, a 24"x36" standard mat pictured previously (under all that glorious fabric) and this book by Denyse Schmidt which I've been lusting after for a while. The large mat will stay at my inlaws' house, since I'm always missing mine when we're here! </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All in all, it was a fabulous birthday and I feel super über loved and spoiled! I guess getting older isn't so bad. Have a happy Sunday! :D</div>

The kind where you take cotton clothesline rope, wrap it with those leftover fabric strips that are too thin to use but you just can't throw away, and sew together in coil fashion using a wide zig zag stitch. So easy, so useful, so fun!<div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-36mWyEsakjs/UsLtPtbdGCI/AAAAAAAAGaw/yAmx_MLpypQ/s640/blogger-image-38774182.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-36mWyEsakjs/UsLtPtbdGCI/AAAAAAAAGaw/yAmx_MLpypQ/s640/blogger-image-38774182.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I made several as last minute Christmas gifts last week and in all the mayhem didn't manage to take many photos! Blarg. I made a big basket with handles for my grandmother, it used 50ft of 3/8" rope, seen in progress below.</div></div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-l6MQzdCUgNo/UsLtS0xc-HI/AAAAAAAAGa4/G1OhsmNq1k8/s640/blogger-image--835748206.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-l6MQzdCUgNo/UsLtS0xc-HI/AAAAAAAAGa4/G1OhsmNq1k8/s640/blogger-image--835748206.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div>The wrapping with fabric part is a bit time consuming, so after a while I decided to play around with just the rope and some brightly colored thread. This worked great and was SO fast. Next time I'll try variegated thread an see how that looks.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qCCw1jCqKsM/UsMZq1Ey2qI/AAAAAAAAGbw/v4qiNRGTno8/s640/blogger-image--537794471.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qCCw1jCqKsM/UsMZq1Ey2qI/AAAAAAAAGbw/v4qiNRGTno8/s640/blogger-image--537794471.jpg"></a></div></div><br></div><div>I made some bowls and baskets in various sizes, including the one above filled with mini charm packs, which I kept for myself. I'm gearing up to make a table runner out of those 2.5" civil war repros, I've been having a thing for them lately.</div><div> </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-F567zYoNEpc/UsMZn1ahZAI/AAAAAAAAGbo/zPHd1Z2NKU0/s640/blogger-image-532771522.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-F567zYoNEpc/UsMZn1ahZAI/AAAAAAAAGbo/zPHd1Z2NKU0/s640/blogger-image-532771522.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I then switched gears to create a set of four coasters all cozied up in their own little carrying case. I think coaster sets may turn out to be a very quick and easy (and cheap!) handmade gifting staple in the the future. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-mitl8UAYOS8/UsMZlW0AbtI/AAAAAAAAGbg/8J4vFyK5iHg/s640/blogger-image-1230244555.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-mitl8UAYOS8/UsMZlW0AbtI/AAAAAAAAGbg/8J4vFyK5iHg/s640/blogger-image-1230244555.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Also some batik wrapped trivets, because those are fun and easy and totally useful, too! Endless possibilities. I didn't have any trouble fitting the rope under my presser foot, but I did raise it up just a smidge by messing with the tension spring.</div><div><br></div><div>As far as rope goes, my first batch was from Westlake Ace Hardware, 50ft for about $8, which seemed steep. It has a poly core but it's mostly cotton and behaved beautifully when sewing. Then my husband got 100 ft lengths for $4 at Walmart, which felt like a steal! It doesn't look as nice unwrapped, but sews just as well. </div><div><br></div><div>Also, Happy New Year! I'm too lazy to round up all my 2013 sewing projects into some kind of mosaic or video, I hope you don't mind. It was such a wonderful year for me, the best yet by far! Here's hoping this year is just as good or web better. </div>Krista Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14404340992690413199noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639049656914524195.post-31198359914377562652013-12-27T16:04:00.001-06:002013-12-27T17:29:49.090-06:00a friday finish and some friendship blocksHi there! While many are catching up on sleep or tearing down their holiday decor, we're headed up to my gram's house for more Christmas festivities. I'm without a hand project for the car ride so I thought I'd blog instead.<div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3gN-nZNNp1s/Ur4Mqb5RWoI/AAAAAAAAGZ8/jeDITd-nFXc/s640/blogger-image-1505883016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3gN-nZNNp1s/Ur4Mqb5RWoI/AAAAAAAAGZ8/jeDITd-nFXc/s640/blogger-image-1505883016.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>First up, a finished quilt that was gifted to my in-laws for Christmas. Since I came into their lives nearly two years ago they've rarely seen me without fabric between my fingers. It's a common topic for teasing, I often hear things like "we always see you sewing, but where are all the quilts?" So last July I whipped up this quilt top according to Jeni Baker's Modern Plus tutorial, found at incolororder.com. I cut all the squares and determined a layout at home and then packed it up along with the featherweight and pieced it on the patio table with my husband's family all right there, none the wiser. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TXiVupS-qBI/Ur4MJvh6oMI/AAAAAAAAGZU/OmdY4q3NHGQ/s640/blogger-image-921344009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TXiVupS-qBI/Ur4MJvh6oMI/AAAAAAAAGZU/OmdY4q3NHGQ/s640/blogger-image-921344009.jpg"></a></div></div><br></div><div>It sat folded in a corner until a week ago when I decided it was crunch time! I pieced the back using the four yards of diagonal plaid from Michael Miller (bought on sale specifically for this purpose) and a little stripe of texty Sweetwater for a bit of flair. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-NvZsxuGWv4k/Ur4Mj9yAC1I/AAAAAAAAGZs/r1rqO7HP0-8/s640/blogger-image-985295.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-NvZsxuGWv4k/Ur4Mj9yAC1I/AAAAAAAAGZs/r1rqO7HP0-8/s640/blogger-image-985295.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I free motion quilted it with a squiggly design on my mom's 1981 Riccar. The binding is a Denyse Schmidt print from one of her earlier DS Quilts lines at Joann's. I glue basted the binding, if you haven't tried it I highly recommend doing so! Sharon Schambers has a great YouTube video on it.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-jvLg9x9Ig8A/Ur4MoOKKpGI/AAAAAAAAGZ0/f21n-7l_Oco/s640/blogger-image--1157702087.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-jvLg9x9Ig8A/Ur4MoOKKpGI/AAAAAAAAGZ0/f21n-7l_Oco/s640/blogger-image--1157702087.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>It was fun watching them open it up, I could tell they really love it! I even caught my MIL snapping photos of it in different positions on the couch. The best thing is I'll get to see it often as we visit my in-laws at least once a month. Yay! </div></div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-UuGWKDPNno4/Ur4Ms6rGtjI/AAAAAAAAGaE/rw8ycauhMXU/s640/blogger-image-644693344.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-UuGWKDPNno4/Ur4Ms6rGtjI/AAAAAAAAGaE/rw8ycauhMXU/s640/blogger-image-644693344.jpg"></a></div></div></div><br></div><div>Ok now for my latest friendship x and plus swap blocks! Only five of these are my work, the others are from Elizabeth. She's making me look bad! <div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-gQTalFjmeZ0/Uo-z9HnGdPI/AAAAAAAAGXY/eKGWrt0_R18/s640/blogger-image-47716270.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-gQTalFjmeZ0/Uo-z9HnGdPI/AAAAAAAAGXY/eKGWrt0_R18/s640/blogger-image-47716270.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>These blocks aren't the quickest for me to put together but they certainly are fun. The key is to have a bunch of pieces all cut up and ready to go for when there's time to sew. That was my plan for the KCMQG sew day I went to a couple weeks ago, but instead I spent most of my time pressing and cutting! </div></div><div><br></div><div> </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xTa_bvolqek/UpkFTgckKYI/AAAAAAAAGXw/Rsk1nhF417I/s640/blogger-image--540915300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xTa_bvolqek/UpkFTgckKYI/AAAAAAAAGXw/Rsk1nhF417I/s640/blogger-image--540915300.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I borrowed a presser foot from the woman sitting behind me, also sewing x and + blocks on her featherweight. Turned out to be Carla of lollyquiltz! Go figure. I had no idea she was in the KC area. She and Susan of patchworknplay started the swap and it was so much fun working on the blocks with her. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-F53Z2qtM2Fs/UpkFRWODKzI/AAAAAAAAGXo/wBbXyZpWVeQ/s640/blogger-image-836921818.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-F53Z2qtM2Fs/UpkFRWODKzI/AAAAAAAAGXo/wBbXyZpWVeQ/s640/blogger-image-836921818.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Right now Jon and I are in Phoenix, visiting my sister and her family. We packed light but I managed to bring a bazillion precut x and plus pieces just in case. Turns out there has been time to sew on my sister's machine, so my nieces and I have already made 12 blocks. Addie is keeping one to hang on her bedroom wall. It is so much fun to "corrupt" a future generation of quilters!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Xrh7qx5j1qg/UpkFV6ZPdoI/AAAAAAAAGX4/SO-3fJ5cFog/s640/blogger-image--350001407.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Xrh7qx5j1qg/UpkFV6ZPdoI/AAAAAAAAGX4/SO-3fJ5cFog/s640/blogger-image--350001407.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving yesterday (if you're in the states) and a great weekend coming up.</div>Krista Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14404340992690413199noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3639049656914524195.post-7560283582213207612013-11-13T16:15:00.001-06:002013-11-13T16:15:37.070-06:00new windows, new cat, and other random stuff<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">After a full Saturday of sewing with the KCMQG, I spent Sunday "supervising" Jon and my Dad as they replaced the 100 year old windows in our little cottage style home. While charming from a distance, these old windows were in really rough shape. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3Wo3xvPi5KQ/UoPp3sUUGqI/AAAAAAAAGV8/nG0fYlxEgME/s640/blogger-image--179730408.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3Wo3xvPi5KQ/UoPp3sUUGqI/AAAAAAAAGV8/nG0fYlxEgME/s640/blogger-image--179730408.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Most of them had rotten sills, cracked panes, and/or missing glazing. Several were painted shut and all the iron weights had been cut loose years ago. We uncovered many wasps nests and cobwebs. I'll miss their character but not the cold drafts and inability to open without fear of them breaking apart and falling out.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W4FkqGbG3UE/UoPputAanhI/AAAAAAAAGVc/XEdA7IysIW8/s640/blogger-image--1247169293.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W4FkqGbG3UE/UoPputAanhI/AAAAAAAAGVc/XEdA7IysIW8/s640/blogger-image--1247169293.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We had my sewing room turned upside down for the windows, so I took the opportunity to recover my pressing mat with some heavy, natural linen. I'd been wanting to do it for a while since the old muslin layer was looking pretty gross. I was too lazy to go the fitted sheet or drawstring route, and opted to simply staple the new fabric over the top of the old. I'm regretting that decision now. Next time around I'll remove the staples, wash the linen and sew on some elastic to make future washings much easier.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-hQSWScCPMow/UoP0oF_N1bI/AAAAAAAAGXE/FSD1NakdJa8/s640/blogger-image-5240984.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-hQSWScCPMow/UoP0oF_N1bI/AAAAAAAAGXE/FSD1NakdJa8/s640/blogger-image-5240984.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Since we were moving the desk around too, I finally dug out the plastic "risers" I bought long ago to raise it up for a more comfortable cutting surface. Now if I can only find an extra one for the odd fifth leg out front and center. I suppose the pressing board could use a lift, too.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ubUPbKXgeH4/UoP0llVR8II/AAAAAAAAGW8/28Ythcr1R6s/s640/blogger-image-779221502.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ubUPbKXgeH4/UoP0llVR8II/AAAAAAAAGW8/28Ythcr1R6s/s640/blogger-image-779221502.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Who thinks I should cut up this old, tattered quilt to make a couple curtain panels? I pinned it there as a temporary solution until we replace the blinds, but now I'm totally digging it. Looks super cool from outside at night, too. Yep, I think I'll do that.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Yesterday I stayed home sick from work. I didn't even feel good enough to sew, can you believe that? I attempted to but my nose was dripping uncontrollably and making a mess of things. I spent most of the day cuddled up with Hank, Lucy and our newest fur baby, nicknamed "Black Cat" until we come up with something better.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-DdOvr5h2yK8/UoPzK7mi4XI/AAAAAAAAGWY/3KzGT7dP55g/s640/blogger-image--2094752715.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-DdOvr5h2yK8/UoPzK7mi4XI/AAAAAAAAGWY/3KzGT7dP55g/s640/blogger-image--2094752715.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">She was an unwanted warehouse kitty at my work for several months, evading capture and only seen by those who came and went earliest and latest. I thought she was a tall tale until I spotted her late afternoon last Thursday, back by a high rise of pallets and some giant bags of dirt. After doing the "here kitty kitty" thing for a minute I managed to get her to come to me. We made friends and I took her home, fully intending to pawn her off on someone else as soon as I got the chance. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I'll blame Jon for getting too attached. She's mega cute and super friendly. Hank can't stand her but has slowly been coming around. Lucy gets whacked every now and again for being overly playful but she's starting to figure it out. We had her spayed, de-wormed, and shot up, so she's part of the family now.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_N2V4Qq2se8/UoPzP3PynBI/AAAAAAAAGWo/fizXMAQ3P98/s640/blogger-image--763502349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_N2V4Qq2se8/UoPzP3PynBI/AAAAAAAAGWo/fizXMAQ3P98/s640/blogger-image--763502349.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I went to work this morning but left early to hit the urgent care clinic. I'll nip my sinus infection in the butt this time instead of suffering for a week or two before finally giving in. The neti pot can only do so much before powerful antibiotics have to get involved. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Now I'm home, resting. If I can't manage a nap I may just stuff some cotton up my nose and head to the sewing room. Pressing, cutting, and stitching fabric isn't that strenuous, right? It's relaxing, even. Maybe I'll make some more of these Jacob's Ladder blocks. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-pb88js_aog4/UoPvM4b3_6I/AAAAAAAAGWM/SaPlxGpgeHM/s640/blogger-image-1953716211.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-pb88js_aog4/UoPvM4b3_6I/AAAAAAAAGWM/SaPlxGpgeHM/s640/blogger-image-1953716211.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Can you spot where I goofed? First one to point it out wins a prize! I'll finish the rest of the blocks before bothering to correct it. Or maybe I'll leave it. Adds a little character, perhaps.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Linking up with Cindy today (although she hasn't posted it yet). No one does random quite like she does! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://patchworknplay.blogspot.com/">Suz</a> and <a href="http://lollyquiltz.blogspot.com/">Carla</a> came up with the nifty idea to do a friendship block swap. You pick a pal, make matching sets of the famous <a href="http://badskirt.blogspot.com/2011/04/japanese-x-and-scrappy-quilt-tutorial.html">x and +</a> blocks each month and swap out so you both end up with one of each. Love it!</span><br />

We're going the scrappy route, which is great since I'd already been cutting away at my ever growing scrap bin, trying to create more usable pieces for future projects. Add this to the list! The goal is to blog about your blocks on the last Friday of the month, but as you can see I've barely started.</span><br />

You go a little overboard when your husband isn't looking. Don't worry, he watched me carry the giant bag into the house. But by then all he could do was give me those "you're out of control" eyes and crack a smile. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gY7_hYJ6fAs/UjXbG1RG_rI/AAAAAAAAFlI/pFZHSD_EjWg/s1600/IMAGE_3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gY7_hYJ6fAs/UjXbG1RG_rI/AAAAAAAAFlI/pFZHSD_EjWg/s640/IMAGE_3.jpeg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The good thing about my LQS (well, the bad thing before, but good thing now!) is that all of the fabric is relatively old. Meaning full price on most of the bolts was 9 dollars or less. I picked up some American Jane Punctuation and Building Blocks yardage, some of my favorite browns, a few books and several spools of King Tut variegated thread.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jg2HD4OKtIc/UjXlxLkW7yI/AAAAAAAAFl4/WXrdfKt9_kk/s1600/IMAGE_9.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jg2HD4OKtIc/UjXlxLkW7yI/AAAAAAAAFl4/WXrdfKt9_kk/s640/IMAGE_9.jpeg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">After posting that doggy print to IG, several people wanted some so I went back and came home with another big bag, this time stuffed with an assortment of black and white and 1930's prints. UGH. The thing about it was you had to buy at least 2 yards to get the discount. My pal Gina, the cutting lady, offered to sub cut the black and whites into 1 yard + 4 fat quarter increments, which rocked. I'm hopeful that some IG peeps might want to take the excess off my hands!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WvtvGFbSRUA/UjXcqnQdneI/AAAAAAAAFlA/_KVHczEZMbQ/s1600/IMAGE_5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WvtvGFbSRUA/UjXcqnQdneI/AAAAAAAAFlA/_KVHczEZMbQ/s640/IMAGE_5.jpeg" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Speaking of a good deal, Fat Quarter Shop's 50% off section is a friend to me. I get email updates and hop over to see what's new there relatively often. I don't always fall for it, but a couple weeks ago they added Lecien's Tiny Prints collection and I jumped. I actually ordered all 18 prints, but only 12 are pictured here because these are the ones making it into a new quilt! But more on that later.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">You know what they say about light ice cream... If it's half the calories you can eat twice as much, right? Surely I can apply that logic to fabric.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Oh! And I'm linking up for Sunday Stash over at <a href="http://findingfifth.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/sunday-stash-80.html">Finding Fifth</a>. Eek, j/k! This week it's over at <a href="http://hotpinkquilts.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/sunday-stash-at-hpq-aka-total.html">Hot Pink Quilts</a>.</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>on a fence at my parents' place, May 2013</i></td></tr>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The first quilt I ever made was for my niece's first birthday in Jan 2011, using Bonnie and Camille's Bliss collection. My mom loved the fabrics and wanted a quilt of her own. I was brand new to the online quilting scene but had read somewhere that once fabric was printed and sold that was it, gone forever.</span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">my first niece on her first birthday with my first quilt, Feb 2011</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">So, with the intent of making her a quilt for mother's day, I immediately went back to my local quilt shop (which is now closing, btw) and bought five charm packs, a jelly roll and three yards of the cheater print, all that was left of the Bliss fabric they had in stock. That was two and a half years ago.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">bliss stash, Feb 2011</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">Fast forward about six months and some lovely blogger ladies (<a href="http://ellisonlane.blogspot.com/">Jennifer</a> and <a href="http://www.fairyfacedesigns.blogspot.com/">Sarah</a>) were hosting their Across the Sea quilt along and I mistakenly thought it was a Greek Cross block pattern. I jumped on board and cut into my bliss stash, this time intending to finish a quilt for my mother by Christmas. I had a digital mock-up I made in paint and new-found ambition.</span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">original mock-up, Aug 2011</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">I got all the half square triangle and half-square rectangle segments pieced before realizing that the quilt I was making didn't fit with the QAL at all. Talk about embarrassing! I'd been posting pictures on the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/acrosstheseamodernqal/pool/with/6075429269/">flickr</a> page and I'm sure everyone was thinking "who is this chick and what the heck is she doing?!"</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">on the design wall, Nov 2012</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">I also noticed that the fabric I'd used as a background was basically blending together with many of the lighter fabrics in the Bliss collection, which felt like a mistake on my part. My mom then mentioned that the quilt I'd made for my niece had a lot of brown in it, which was the main thing she liked about it. I'd pulled all the browns since there weren't enough of them to really work with my design. This is when I stalled out and let things sit for a while.</span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">on a fence at my parents' place, May 2013</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">Christmas and her birthday came and went. I briefly pulled it out again to work on for Mother's Day but didn't get far. Then I met my husband, so I didn't get a whole lot of quilting done for a minute. Fast forward to November of 2012, I was feeling like a major loser for not getting any sewing things done to give as Christmas gifts. Jon suggested we finish up the Bliss quilt for my mom. WE? This man spent a whole evening arranging nine-patch segments oh so perfectly given my strict specifications. I would sew, he would press. Talk about love!</span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wRtN2dAUhzM/UjNdLvv9uRI/AAAAAAAAFiU/LQMT2wX7KZw/s1600/IMG_1339.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wRtN2dAUhzM/UjNdLvv9uRI/AAAAAAAAFiU/LQMT2wX7KZw/s640/IMG_1339.jpg" width="640" /></span></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">on the design wall, Nov 2012</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">I made the executive decision that my original plan for 30 blocks just wasn't going to happen. I stole some of the HST units from said unmade blocks to construct a border, and would have added another border using background fabric but there wasn't enough of it left. I think the quilt would have looked awesome if the design were floating, but I had the opportunity to quilt it on my aunt's mother's longarm while visiting family over Thanksgiving, so there just wasn't time to order more.</span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">on the longarm, Nov 2012</span></i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">Oh, and I added some brown! For two reasons, really. My mom wanted more brown, and I think the quilt needed some blocks that "pop" out of the design, since several of the others seem to fade in and out. I grew to love that about the others once I added the brown focus blocks. It gives kind of a modern vibe to a traditional quilt. I also used a brown thrifted bed sheet for the backing and the same fabrics as those added brown blocks to construct a scrappy binding.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Christmas crept up on me and I had to gift-wrap the quilt sans binding, but I did manage to sew the last hand-stitch to finish it while sitting in the car on the side of the road with a flat tire in subzero weather on the last night of the year. Just in time to hand it back to her twelve hours later on her birthday. She's a New Years baby!</span><br />

So I'm celebrating by linking up with <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2013/09/re-runs.html">Finish it Up Friday</a> over at Crazy Mom Quilts to celebrate :D</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />

Maybe I should share all the bee blocks I've made in the last few months, quick before fall sets in.</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zOAhBMIa6lY/Ui3cxj3_gRI/AAAAAAAAFa4/F4OnFrptuSU/s640/blogger-image-72349380.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="640" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745623020_314" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2839/9087799785_a6981d8b8a_k.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">First up are Monique's (sewfunbymonique.blogspot.com) scrappy trip blocks from June. She wanted pink, brown, orange, purple and a touch of aqua so they'd match the ones she already made back during the scrappy trip along frenzy. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-bkz3syDmn90/Ui3eXg3o-9I/AAAAAAAAFbc/lzZOew-3jFg/s640/blogger-image--1016537720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="640" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745716565_341" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7423/9087796667_2f02587589_k.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">These are such quick and fun blocks to make (free tutorial at quiltville.com). Hopefully Monique will get a chance to incorporate our bee blocks and finish up a WIP, it's so nice to check things off the to-do list.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xks6uoH8boc/Ui3ea3CbRXI/AAAAAAAAFbk/nga0HZrm9-U/s640/blogger-image-2009801538.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="640" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745657019_316" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7417/9087798053_253072518a_k.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Next are Nicole's (boldgoods.com) Christmas in July blocks. She pointed us towards her Christmas Pinterest board to use as inspiration and asked for any style and size blocks we wanted.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RDtoUtFHQjI/Ui3c1bjsPjI/AAAAAAAAFbA/Dj9rPJkcE5E/s640/blogger-image-860620915.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="640" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745543412_321" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3758/9580264718_4e4f5dbd79_k.jpg" width="637" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I had a hard time figuring out what to do at first, mostly because when I'm given free reign I kind of freeze up, especially when making for someone else. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-32aoWuGBQZc/Ui0PLr-aZXI/AAAAAAAAFao/BXESVnPYWTM/s640/blogger-image-530445590.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="640" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745496221_321" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2835/9577477831_d5029ce6ad_k.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I thought a green circle of geese block (free template at quiltbynumber.com) might pass for a Christmas wreath in a not so obvious sort of way. I had fun creating a scrappy yet unified background out of various low volume scraps.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-QkgbQG-V2cw/Ui0PGGTSIGI/AAAAAAAAFaY/j3p3CRoH5JY/s640/blogger-image-624933736.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="638" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745574891_325" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3820/9580266816_44f677f067_k.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I went for quick and easy on the second one, throwing together more scraps from my Christmas modern plus quilt into a rectangular block. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I might have gone ever so slightly overboard in August...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X7irRcOmDHM/Ui3efiVrTUI/AAAAAAAAFbs/7Y_vLodvvHI/s640/blogger-image--1827167359.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="638" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745129998_316" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5345/9684387016_384c085350_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Kris (dukesayssewwhat.blogspot.com) has a really cool skateboard block tutorial on her blog and asked us to make just one since they're a little big. I planned on doing two anyways but somehow ended up with four. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-iiMKZsae8wo/Ui0PIlAfjbI/AAAAAAAAFag/V-2nzk6L5w8/s640/blogger-image--1031667496.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="639" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-iiMKZsae8wo/Ui0PIlAfjbI/AAAAAAAAFag/V-2nzk6L5w8/s640/blogger-image--1031667496.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I probably don't need to post them all individually but I'm going to anyways :P</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-tw2cJ5QahLc/Ui3c7usyLtI/AAAAAAAAFbQ/w96ALDSUY8Q/s640/blogger-image-1539541918.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="639" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-tw2cJ5QahLc/Ui3c7usyLtI/AAAAAAAAFbQ/w96ALDSUY8Q/s640/blogger-image-1539541918.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Kris and her husband own a skateboard shop in the Pacific Northwest and she's always stitching something by hand while watching her son do cool stunts at the skate park. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-6AZWFCJbdpw/Ui3c4cV9FQI/AAAAAAAAFbI/wdiUKAYaCQ4/s640/blogger-image--2115261144.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="639" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-6AZWFCJbdpw/Ui3c4cV9FQI/AAAAAAAAFbI/wdiUKAYaCQ4/s640/blogger-image--2115261144.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">She said we could use different textures if we wanted, so I snuck in a few bits of voile, flannel, and canvas/twill. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Q2xdowBYm34/Ui0PDdhbaWI/AAAAAAAAFaQ/fz3_KLZcCrk/s640/blogger-image-743981817.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="639" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745933757_314" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5453/9684388114_e172eae0b5_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Last up is my first ever set of do. Good Stitches blocks, as I've been invited to join the Heal circle led by Nicke (kisskissquilt.blogspot.com).</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EAeooCUQix8/Ui3ei-COLSI/AAAAAAAAFb0/0lb2I69_zKQ/s640/blogger-image--298885940.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="640" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378744938280_314" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3832/9695857848_c625f5f3b6_k.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I'm super excited to be part of this charity quilting bee! I'm filling Rachael's spot, (imaginegnats.blogspot.com), she's left some tough shoes to fill but I'm ready to give it a go.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-KoMu4hKRwJY/Ui3kYUZW1VI/AAAAAAAAFcE/MQrzS_2WY1E/s640/blogger-image--1469614957.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="640" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745013694_314" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2884/9692623187_a787eec622_k.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">These are modern maples blocks for August (free tutorial at larkcrafts.com). What's really neat about the Heal Circle is Nicke gets to hand deliver the quilts to hospice patients. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ySQZmhDNO5s/Ui0PAn1tcxI/AAAAAAAAFaI/4ueTXMVbAIM/s640/blogger-image--566167812.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img height="640" id="yui_3_7_3_3_1378745055487_314" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3688/9695851696_c55a099f3f_k.jpg" width="639" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I've noticed several other members are familiar faces either from blogging or Instagram or both, so that's pretty cool, too. Thanks for having me, ladies! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Now if I could just make it to the post office... </span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Just a quick note: I'm posting from the blogger app on my iPhone and there isn't a way to add hyperlinks, or if there is I just haven't figured it out yet. I'm also not 100% sure how my photos will turn out, they might be a bit blurry if viewing from a computer. Fingers crossed that isn't the case!</span></div>

<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7Sa6_23dXEs/Ue62FwfyCCI/AAAAAAAAFS0/cSwJizadKpE/s640/blogger-image-1982987181.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7Sa6_23dXEs/Ue62FwfyCCI/AAAAAAAAFS0/cSwJizadKpE/s640/blogger-image-1982987181.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I'm not a huge fan of Facebook these days, but I will give props for it's miraculous way of reconnecting you with people from your past. My dad's corporate job had us jumping around a bit when I was growing up and there are several best buds who I've lost touch with along the way. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">After moving from a suburb of Philadelphia, PA to one near Memphis, TN, I was the new kid in mid April of my sixth grade year. Talk about culture shock! Amanda and I were fast friends, we'd pass notes in class and hang out at each others' houses doing hair and makeup. She was the first friend my mom parents let me to go out into the world alone with, we hit the mall and felt like rockstars carrying around her mother's cell phone, something no one our age had at the time. Ah, memories! </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Llso_0c2YDA/Ue7crKXl09I/AAAAAAAAFTE/wbcj7dVFNz4/s640/blogger-image-348842620.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Llso_0c2YDA/Ue7crKXl09I/AAAAAAAAFTE/wbcj7dVFNz4/s640/blogger-image-348842620.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">We both moved away a couple years later and despite her love for stationary and writing letters by hand, I was a horrible pen pal and we eventually lost touch. Fast forward ten years and we we're Facebook friends, though it wasn't until recently that we really reconnected, over quilting, of course! </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">She's relatively new to the making part but has loved the art for a while, so we've been feverishly texting back and forth about fabric sales and sewing technique and patterns we like. Here's where that stack of fabric comes in. A few days ago we both decided to make modern plus quilts using Jeni Baker's <a href="http://www.incolororder.com/2010/09/plus-quilt-tutorial.html">free tutorial</a>. We each pulled fabrics from our stashes and have started cutting. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I've gone the "Christmas in July" route, hoping the "in July" part will encourage me to finish it quickly, considering it's almost August. Follow Amanda on Instagram @graccieone to see her fabric pulls, as well as several other really awesome projects she's working on. She's a natural and I think it's so awesome that quilts brought us back together. Gives me the warm and fuzzies!!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Hope you all have a wonderful day :D</span></div>

I don't blame you! I got married and fell off the face of the planet. It happens. I've been busy with work and quilting and wifing and whatnot. I thought I'd pop in and share what quilty things I've been up to since the last time I shared. There's quite a bit, actually. But first, here's the obligatory wedding photo.</span><br />
<br />
<div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-VvGuUSitNAo/UeXBcClU79I/AAAAAAAAFR0/5yfDsen1iHA/s640/blogger-image--1278352164.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-VvGuUSitNAo/UeXBcClU79I/AAAAAAAAFR0/5yfDsen1iHA/s640/blogger-image--1278352164.jpg" width="638" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>after the ceremony</i></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<span style="font-size: large;">After the honeymoon, I managed to clean up and organize my sewing room. It's now the most usable space it's ever been! There's still a lot that could be done, so I don't want to show it off just yet. But let's just say Jon spends a lot of time in here with me now that there's room for him, which is why I've been so productive lately!</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I finished our wedding quilt a few weeks ago. Well, the top, anyways. I'm not sure how to go about basting this 90"x105" beast, let alone quilting it. It's a <a href="http://sewwithsass.blogspot.com/2013/04/quilts-st-louis-16-patch.html">St. Louis 16 patch</a> in Charleston Farmhouse by Felicity Miller. I threw in a few coordinating prints from my stash to make it stretch a bit further and add some dimension. Jon really loves this quilt, which makes me super happy. </span><br />
</div>
<div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-QyzcKa-v0Ss/UeYGGJxikqI/AAAAAAAAFSE/0OovUaZS5Lk/s640/blogger-image-2068040082.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="638" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-QyzcKa-v0Ss/UeYGGJxikqI/AAAAAAAAFSE/0OovUaZS5Lk/s640/blogger-image-2068040082.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i>16 patch wedding quilt</i></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I also made ~30 more scrappy trip along blocks, giving me a total of 64 for a 96" square quilt. This is comprised of 2 parts Chicopee fabric by Denyse Schmidt and 2 parts coordinating prints from my stash. I spent a minute and a half deciding on the layout, about as much time as it took to scatter them all haphazardly on the floor. Good enough for me! </span><br />
</div>
<div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I've made some more progress on this hand piecing project. This might be the first time it's appeared on the blog! I don't have a real plan for it but so far there are 25 batik four patches put on point in Kona coal. It's a bit silly to do 90 degree angles using the English paper piecing method, but it's just what happened one day when I needed something to do in the car. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">My flowerburst hexies have come out of hiding. <a href="http://dukesayssewwhat.blogspot.com/">Kris</a> coined the name a year and a half ago when I first started working on them. I'm not exactly sure how many I have now, and they don't resurface that often, but purple and teal one pictured was my project over the past weekend when we were out of town visiting my grandmother.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Last up is the voile strip quilt I finished yesterday after work. It's a variation on the <a href="http://www.e-quilterscorner.com/blog/2013/02/21/free-1600-jelly-roll-quilt-pattern/">1600 jellyroll quilt</a> (aka jellyroll race!). I used 70 4"x50" strips, which yielded a generous king size quilt top. I was calling it my 3500 quilt since it started as a 3500" long strip rather than the 1600" of a standard jellyroll. The colors and values aren't dispersed perfectly, but that's part of the excitement of starting with one long strip and having no idea where you'll end up. It was so fast and easy and brainless!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Surely that's enough to make up for a two month absence! I think I owe someone a pile of Liberty HSTs from the Give Me Liberty sew-along. I'll go with Cathi, of <a href="http://gertrudemade.com/">Gertrude Made</a>, who whipped up a lovely pair of <a href="http://gertrudemade.com/2013/05/09/give-me-liberty-sew-along/">patchwork pillows</a> using her treasured Liberty stash. Thanks to everyone who played along with us, that was a great last minute escape from all those pre-wedding jitters! </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Boy, this day really got away from me! In all fairness, I spent most of it in bed until now, as I'm home sick with the not cool kind of tummy ache. Not that there's ever a cool kind. But this kind is the really not cool kind. Now to get that thought out of your mind, here's my Give Me Liberty! sew-along project, lounging about amongst the violets.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZQb5dSChZzw/UYlPm0pzblI/AAAAAAAAEnA/kfInqyHcjDA/s1600/IMAGE_D672A20E-0380-444B-A1A1-B5DC7CAF0A39.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZQb5dSChZzw/UYlPm0pzblI/AAAAAAAAEnA/kfInqyHcjDA/s640/IMAGE_D672A20E-0380-444B-A1A1-B5DC7CAF0A39.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">It was originally going to be a big pillow, but I switched gears and made a little mini quilt instead. I plan on hanging it either in my sewing room or the living room if I can find the right spot for it! Though it looks pretty cute under my great grandmother's kitty tea pot and sugar bowl there on the sideboard. That's the antique piece of furniture Jon's family got us as a wedding gift, which I'll have to properly show off sometime soon!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BkwlmqXq1fM/UYlS1fAYAeI/AAAAAAAAEnM/qYdAVZbn0H8/s1600/photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BkwlmqXq1fM/UYlS1fAYAeI/AAAAAAAAEnM/qYdAVZbn0H8/s640/photo.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I used two layers of batting so it would be puffy and quilted a diagonal crosshatch through the half square triangles. The backing is Millie's Closet "floral bouquet" in green, (another FQS 50% off bargain buy) and I bound it with a brown civil war print that I absolutely adore and would buy a lot more of if I ever saw it again. I'd like to put a little label on it, when I get a chance.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The Give Me Liberty! sew-along <a href="http://boldgoods.com/give-me-liberty-link-up/">link up</a> is over Nicole's blog, <a href="http://boldgoods.com/">Bold Goods</a>, today. She's posted a lovely baby quilt <span style="font-size: large;">and </span>interesting thoughts on it's design and construction. Go check it out, will ya? We had a lot of fun hosting this thing and can't wait to see your projects! Don't worry, they don't have to be finished, and I think she's leaving it open for a whole week in case you're not ready just yet.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BFbXW1x2TOI/UXcwHiBOFsI/AAAAAAAAEIc/RBJ3nKBTMAE/s1600/IMAGE_D196798C-E3EF-4796-9E8E-613370B87DB7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BFbXW1x2TOI/UXcwHiBOFsI/AAAAAAAAEIc/RBJ3nKBTMAE/s640/IMAGE_D196798C-E3EF-4796-9E8E-613370B87DB7.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">And since there are a bunch of half square triangles left over, I
thought I'd offer them up in a little giveaway of sorts. If you've
recently sewn up anything using Liberty prints and would like to post about it and our link-up, anyone who links up will have chance at nabbing my remaining 40+ 2.5" <span style="font-size: large;">trimmed, B</span>loomsbury HST units. Keep in mind they're tiny and have bias edges, but man their cute. I'm secretly hoping no one enters so I won't have to part with the<span style="font-size: large;">m!</span> </span><br />

They are for Deb of <a href="http://lifeontheselvageedge.blogspot.com/">Life on the Selvage Edge</a> and were a lot of fun to make. She asked for a scrappy, low volume background with a pop of color for the cross. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">This month it's my turn to be queen bee. I decided on my block yesterday, sewed up a couple and will be revealing them along with a tutorial of sorts as soon as possible. Probably tomorrow. They're a variation on a project I started recently, which I'll now tell you about!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I've wanted to make a strip-pieced 16 patch quilt for months now, I'd even thought about making one with my Liberty stash for the Give Me Liberty <a href="http://kristastitched.blogspot.com/2013/04/give-me-liberty-sew-along.html">sew-along</a>, but once Steffani's <a href="http://sewwithsass.blogspot.com/2013/04/quilts-st-louis-16-patch.html">St. Louis sixteen patch</a> hit Instagram, I was all over it. Think scrappy trip along with bigger strips and no seam rippers! </span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Two weeks ago I got this Charleston Farmhouse fat quarter bundle in the mail from Pink Castle Fabrics. It was an impulse buy! I'd never seen or heard of this line before, there was a bundle sale going on, I loved the colors and bought it from my iphone without really knowing what it looked like up close! I immediately pulled ten coordinating prints from my stash to give me a total of 30 fat quarters, which will yield 30 blocks for a 5x6 layout. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">with ten stash pulls mixed in</span></i></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A few nights later I spent roughly 2.5 hours working on it. First I sorted my fabrics into four values: darks, medium darks, medium lights, and lights. I then used a black and white photo to check to see if there were any outliers and adjusted accordingly. A couple of these prints were hard to do considering the print, but I made sure to pair them with something that had color contrast as well just to be safe. </span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><i>sorted into four values</i></span></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Then I paired the darks with medium lights and the lights with medium darks in order to get the most contrast in each of my blocks. Again, I double checked with the black and white photo. </span><br />

</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">All that might have taken a half hour, maybe less. The real time suck was pressing and cutting! It's one of my favorite parts, though. I did it in a very methodical way, pressing each pairing right sides together so they'd be pressed together and ready to sew after cutting. I use <a href="http://www.faultless.com/mg_1.php">Magic Sizing</a> to stiffen my fabric up, I find it makes the whole process of piecing a quilt a lot easier than using nothing at all. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">sub-cutting 4.25" strips </span></i></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I even upped my strips to 4.25" by 17" in order to get the most out of my fabric and increase the size of the unfinished blocks from 14.5" to 15.5". The tutorial calls for 4" by 16" strips but you can comfortably squeeze in an extra 1/4" and I even saw someone on IG doing 4.5" by 18" but that leaves you no wiggle room if your fat quarters aren't the right size or perfectly square, or if you just wanna be able to work fast and trim down later. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><i><span style="font-size: small;">a strip-piecing pile-up</span></i></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">At any rate, 2.5 hours of mad crazy strip piecing on the following Friday morning yielded 16 blocks. I finished the remaining 14 a day or two later, which would yield a 75" by 90" quilt. I spent a day or two deliberating how I could manage to make 6 more blocks so it can be big enough for our bed. </span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><i>the first 16 blocks, not the final layout</i></span></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I called numerous local quilt shops (anything within 2 hours driving distance) to see if they had some Charleston Farmhouse so I could get it immediately but had no luck. I tried my stash too, but I'd already pulled as much as I had that would work with this. I ended up ordering more fabric online and if it comes in the next week or so, we might just have a wedding quilt after all! </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I meant to post about my Give Me Liberty sew-along progress on Monday, but life got in the way. Stupid life. I have 81 2.5" half square triangle units hanging out and waiting to become a pillow. I've been playing around with options but am not sure where I'm really headed yet. </span><br />

I blame Instagram and Paypal, primarily. People are like "buy this awesome fabric!" and I'm all like "ok, I will!" Paypal makes it so easy. Since I'm trying to get back into the blogging groove, I thought I'd share what's come in the mail recently.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5KZ3fFOamYo/UXNzyxirjrI/AAAAAAAAD7c/PPTOaaakxGE/s1600/IMAGE_4BA17F4B-8C84-4375-B82C-07D7FD8ABAA1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5KZ3fFOamYo/UXNzyxirjrI/AAAAAAAAD7c/PPTOaaakxGE/s640/IMAGE_4BA17F4B-8C84-4375-B82C-07D7FD8ABAA1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I fell in love with Michael Miller's mirror ball dots at Quiltcon but didn't buy any. Then <a href="http://www.knotted-thread.com/">Jennifer</a> posted this bundle for a bit of a deal on IG and I took the plunge cause she's a pal and I like supporting quilty friends. You can find this same bundle in her <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/knotthreads?ref=top_trail">etsy shop</a>. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UT1rLz9Y3wM/UXN8ROqyluI/AAAAAAAAD7s/sRV0Tc41p8E/s1600/IMAGE_7C29E700-5A5D-4B36-915D-2543EEB39090.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UT1rLz9Y3wM/UXN8ROqyluI/AAAAAAAAD7s/sRV0Tc41p8E/s640/IMAGE_7C29E700-5A5D-4B36-915D-2543EEB39090.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
I hate that the photo is blurry, but you get the idea. I nabbed these cuties in an IG destash. User @msjonah has an etsy shop which you can find <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/bellyofawhale">here</a>, and she's got one heck of a stash. It's more like a decent sized fabric store, since she seems to purchase a lot of things by the bolt. She's heading to quilt market in Portland and needed to make some room for new stuff.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nVpRZfdss40/UXN0Gn5mr8I/AAAAAAAAD7g/9o33fNS1cNI/s1600/IMAGE_2BCD6398-0288-4667-993C-B341AFD3BDF0.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nVpRZfdss40/UXN0Gn5mr8I/AAAAAAAAD7g/9o33fNS1cNI/s640/IMAGE_2BCD6398-0288-4667-993C-B341AFD3BDF0.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
She even offered up small scraps for free, so long as I paid the shipping. Score! These are all japanese import and/or kawaii fabrics, I'm not sure what that means but I know they're awesome. She sent my mushroom, hedgehog, and sheep fat quarters in a medium flat rate box, packed tightly the rest of the way with these awesome scraps. I love itty bitty patchwork so these will be perfect for that. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fHY0mMHi8NE/UXN86pBlwpI/AAAAAAAAD74/Oak_78BmeHQ/s1600/IMAGE_DB1EC353-AFE2-4F30-9A2F-DF23F205C36D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fHY0mMHi8NE/UXN86pBlwpI/AAAAAAAAD74/Oak_78BmeHQ/s640/IMAGE_DB1EC353-AFE2-4F30-9A2F-DF23F205C36D.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also hit the $6 voile bandwagon pretty hard over the last several weeks, ordering a few different times from <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/">Sew Mama Sew</a> before she suddenly decided to close up shop. What a bummer! I plan on doing some kind of fast, strip pieced quilt from the voile, with that top AMH "clippings" print for the backing. I figure the "pastry" stripes will make decent binding. I also bought enough of the bottom two prints to make myself a couple summer dresses. <br />
<br />
Well, that's all for now!<br />
<br />
<i>Edit to add: sometimes I write fast and forget to spell check... in the original version of this post (and post title, ack!) I misspelled the word "acquisition" in a really obvious, goofy way. Whoops! Talk about embarrassing. I'm sure my English teacher sister was horrified :P</i><br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2u9lz6axEJM/UXH59T2WGmI/AAAAAAAAD1M/kd_Qzj8ugP4/s1600/photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2u9lz6axEJM/UXH59T2WGmI/AAAAAAAAD1M/kd_Qzj8ugP4/s640/photo.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The Moda booth at Quiltcon was handing out free mini charm packs, comprised of 2.5" squares. I picked the Comma line by Zen Chic and immediately sewed it up into a simple patchwork panel when I got home. I pieced them using the fusible interfacing <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2012/03/stamp-collection-making-the-block-.html">method</a>, mostly because I planned to make a zip pouch from it and figured the stiffer it was, the better. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7wUd8spgkKM/UXH0-FnyyGI/AAAAAAAAD0k/6It4eZgmTJM/s1600/IMAGE_B0B92912-E9DC-41B7-A37B-C21E2BFAA6A2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7wUd8spgkKM/UXH0-FnyyGI/AAAAAAAAD0k/6It4eZgmTJM/s640/IMAGE_B0B92912-E9DC-41B7-A37B-C21E2BFAA6A2.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I added some batting and quilted it using a zig<span style="font-size: large;">-</span>zag stitch along all the seams, then decided it wasn't quite stiff enough for my liking and went back over it with a grid on the diagonal through the points. All this was done with my walking foot. I used some mechanical genius circuit boards (a Timeless Treasures print I got for 50% off at Fat Quarter Shop a while ago, gotta love a good deal!) for the backside and quilted it with wavy lines in orange thread. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l3jagSbc4jE/UXIAYSDXsRI/AAAAAAAAD2M/KaMPkzovB7Q/s1600/IMAGE_13A07D37-68F4-4562-85DA-F2C92BFCF853.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l3jagSbc4jE/UXIAYSDXsRI/AAAAAAAAD2M/KaMPkzovB7Q/s640/IMAGE_13A07D37-68F4-4562-85DA-F2C92BFCF853.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The lining fabric is a Tina Givens print called "on the fence" which I picked up a few months ago in a super sale at <a href="http://www.deltapatchwork.com/">delta patchwork</a> for something like 2 dollars a yard. Talk about cheap! The scale of the print turned out way larger than I was expecting, so I figured I'd use some of it up for this. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8QK6D_4vfus/UXH1GHLo8qI/AAAAAAAAD2U/7MGbXbHrCvc/s1600/IMAGE_5A55F2B5-10F5-46CB-BF3C-2C2CE5D7256D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8QK6D_4vfus/UXH1GHLo8qI/AAAAAAAAD2U/7MGbXbHrCvc/s640/IMAGE_5A55F2B5-10F5-46CB-BF3C-2C2CE5D7256D.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I put little tabs on the ends of the zipper and kept the zipper+tabs length a good 1.25" shorter than the width of the outer panels so the tabs wouldn't get sewn into the seams. This way it's less bulk to sew through and the corners look neater, I think. I also kept the lining a good half inch shorter on the sides and bottom, making it a tad smaller so it would fit better inside the pouch. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PC4sS_Co_wQ/UXH1Jzq7WVI/AAAAAAAAD10/UGKq0mNYFzQ/s1600/IMAGE_3EAA9E20-FBAA-4743-A6D8-B31E0E3D4606.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PC4sS_Co_wQ/UXH1Jzq7WVI/AAAAAAAAD10/UGKq0mNYFzQ/s640/IMAGE_3EAA9E20-FBAA-4743-A6D8-B31E0E3D4606.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I'm very please with how it turned out, even though it took me a month and a half to finally install the zipper and finish the darn thing! It measures in at a generous 12x14 inches and will be perfect for carrying my rotating cutting mat, square rulers and other larger, flattish quilting tools when I'm traveling. And <span style="font-size: large;">kudos</span> to me for whipping up a post about it the same day I finished it!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-31dDg8a2Awk/UW00Qml-bEI/AAAAAAAADyA/RujBCflHW5I/s1600/liberty-banner.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="299" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-31dDg8a2Awk/UW00Qml-bEI/AAAAAAAADyA/RujBCflHW5I/s640/liberty-banner.gif" width="640" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: large;">Then join the <b>Give Me Liberty! sew along</b> hosted by Nicole of <a href="http://boldgoods.com/" target="_blank">Bold Goods</a> and myself, which starts today. We were both drooling over our Liberty stashes on Instagram and figured we should grab the scissors and ask you all to do the same. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3vru3yY0StE/UW0-ErjH9pI/AAAAAAAADyw/wjJn6CzLDcU/s1600/8643251607_f49bd5210b_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3vru3yY0StE/UW0-ErjH9pI/AAAAAAAADyw/wjJn6CzLDcU/s400/8643251607_f49bd5210b_z.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><span style="font-size: large;">There aren't any rules other than it's gotta be a sewing project with Liberty of London fabrics as the focus, just use your best judgement there. And if you're unsure, ask Nicole because I don't want to be the bad cop! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It can be a project you've already been working on or something you start up now, doesn't matter. Just mention that you're sewing along with us and reference this post, and perhaps add a button/logo to your blog or flickr or instagram or facebook or wherever you share your sewing related activities. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iMEGA0UwwhY/UW05OYJUx-I/AAAAAAAADyI/KQpKAH-lPJQ/s1600/instagram-liberty.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iMEGA0UwwhY/UW05OYJUx-I/AAAAAAAADyI/KQpKAH-lPJQ/s320/instagram-liberty.gif" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: large;"> Post about your progress over the next three weeks and then on May 7th, head over to Nicole's blog to link up a finished project! I'm no good with the technologies and whatnot, so she'll be handling all of that. She used her computer wizardry to make the awesome banner and logo. Thanks, Nicole! </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u2HMzG7VRmU/UW07SRu0HmI/AAAAAAAADyo/CiaEqYyHrzQ/s1600/IMAGE_0EBBB4DA-347C-4D6D-B767-D07F86EB237C.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u2HMzG7VRmU/UW07SRu0HmI/AAAAAAAADyo/CiaEqYyHrzQ/s400/IMAGE_0EBBB4DA-347C-4D6D-B767-D07F86EB237C.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I'm planning a half square triangle project with my Liberty. Perhaps a pillow in the style of Rita at Red Pepper Quilts. I love what she did with HSTs in <a href="http://www.redpepperquilts.com/2012/10/a-sneak-chicopeek.html" target="_blank">this</a> project. Although that would be a LOT of tiny hsts for a pillow, so we'll see what kind of variation I can come up with. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span><span style="font-size: large;">Head over to <a href="http://boldgoods.com/">Bold Goods</a> to see what Nicole is planning for her Liberty project, and I hope you'll join us for our sew along! </span>Krista Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14404340992690413199noreply@blogger.com9
